Understanding vintage and retro timelines

by Jim Buckman
March 7, 2025

Clothing lines, fashion, and style are a few terms that most of the present global residents are familiar with. Though, when splitting the meanings of fashion and style, we come with two very different concepts. Fashion is something more mainstream, and what the world likes to wear, style is a relative term. All those who work in, or are influenced by the fashion world, are familiar with the ‘vintage‘ and the ‘retro‘ styles.

Like fashion and style, these two words are also used interchangeably, quite often. They actually differ highly in both meaning and sentiment. There are only quite a few elites who understand the true meaning of vintage and retro styles. The rest ignorant population drags these words in every communication referring to the styles of the past. But we have got you covered, though. Here is a detailed description for you to refer to whenever you feel like buying something retro!

Clothing of the vintage history

The word vintage tracks its origin to the French word ‘vendange’ which refers to aged wines made from a particular grape harvest. For any clothing to make it to the list of vintage items, it has to come from a particular era. The time period begins from or earlier than the 1920s and ends at around 2000. Hence, this comes to the very clear point that vintage clothing is more about the age, and the production time of the dresses, or clothing. The style has very little to do with it.

Now, you need to understand that the modern-day stores selling newly produced ‘vintage dresses’ can never be considered truly vintage. Yes, a dress can be vintage-inspired, but not vintage in the pure sense. Even clothing items that are not anymore in fashion or old-styled are not truly vintage if they do not date back at least 20 years.

To be more clearer, understand that a dress in today’s time is only vintage if it was manufactured sometime between 1920 and 2000. Nothing of the later decade will make the cut. Although some vintage clothing items are more prevalent than others. You are more likely to consider a fur coat of the 1960s as vintage when compared to a blouse even dating back to the 1950s.

The vintage definition remains the same for other items such as furniture, jewelry, or clocks.

Retro styling and understanding

Retro styles are more contemporary in nature than vintage styles can ever be. In contrast to the true vintage, a retro-style is only an imitation of what was common or fashionable during the bygone times. There is no specific age for an item to be counted as retro. Cloth stores that work with styles and costumes of the past times are certainly retro in all terms. Bringing back any imitations of times long gone, like a fur coat produced today, will be retro and not vintage.

Retro styling is a way to show appreciation to vintage times and costumes which are not present today. When someone does not have the means and finances to possess vintage items, he can rely upon retro clothes to create old-fashioned looks. Wearing retro dresses can become a fashion, but vintage clothing will always be a matter of style and availability.

Imitation of vintage designs, either in toys, art, or even houses, can be considered as retro.

A thought on antiques

An antique is a truly ancient product, difficult to come by, and even harder to possess. Antique clothing is usually found in museums and dates back to before 100 years from now.
