Have you always dreamed of becoming something more than you already are? If so, you aren’t alone. So many of us have lofty ideas and dreams, only to settle for something much less when push comes to shove. But is it necessarily a bad thing? Do we have to let our ambition get in the way of our lives? The answer is no, we don’t. Read on to learn how and why ambition can become a bad thing at times.
When it comes to ambition, too much can actually cause problems in your life. For example, your relationships could easily suffer because you are too worried about achieving your goals. If you decide to go to medical school, it’s easy to push all of your relationships out of the way, family and friends included. You’ll be so intent on studying that you won’t have time for anything fun in your life.
The truth is, the right relationship can actually help you achieve your goals. A person who loves and cares for you will do what they can to help you, not hinder you. You could very much lose out on the love of your life if you purposely put your ambition in front of everything else.
If you are constantly working or studying, you’re likely to turn down invitations left and right. When you are out with friends or family, you might be worried about when you can get back to work. This can be emotionally draining for the people around you. If you keep it up, they will likely simply stop inviting you places. The longer this happens, the fewer friends you will have. Yes, you may get to your goal quicker, but at what cost?
Too much ambition in your life can also lead to a bad case of burnout. You can only push your body and mind so much until it rebels! You never know when you could snap if you are constantly burning the candle at both ends. Burnout can quickly cause your career to fail if you end up not being able to function at all. Many people end up in the hospital because they worked themselves too much.
Here’s the thing- it really is okay to be average. We have to understand that we all can’t be the best at something. It’s perfectly fine to do your best at what you are good at. Sure, you should always strive to be the best person that you can be. But that certainly doesn’t mean you have to push yourself over and over to succeed. There is no reason why average shouldn’t be good enough for you.
Don’t worry if you haven’t always put your ambition or goals in front of everything else. Relationships are very important in life, and there is also more to our existence than work and money. Being average is something that should be celebrated, not looked down on. Be happy with the person you are while you try to be the best person you can be- slowly!
